3 Outfits I Wear For Every Day Life

Here is the whole truth, I am pretty boring when it comes to getting dressed every day. I sometimes rewear the same shirt from the day before or even the one I slept in the night before. That is the truth. This time of year, I look for clothes that fit loosely, offer utility, can go from dinner out to the beach and over a bathing suit, and I like it to be simple. I enjoy getting sweaty and dirty and even more so enjoy smelling like last night’s bon fire or dip in the lake. To me life is best lived when we think less about what we have to put on and more about what we will do once we are ready for the day.

So I thought this month, I would share things I actually wear while I do some of my favorite things every day. In all truth here folks. I want you to see just what I wear when I garden, go to the beach with Hayes, or cook in the kitchen on my day off work. I am just a mama, gardener, seasonal dweller, and adventurer who deeply enjoys simplicity and comfort. I don’t feel natural in silk or sweeping dresses. It isn’t me and I have come to accept that. I thrive in denim, linen, and cotton fabrics that flow with my life. My hair is typically tied back and slept on and I like it that way. I don’t do fancy well…just ask Mike…I tripped over a chain the other weekend at a wedding while wearing heels. Ha. So, here is a real look into how I dress typically and the items I literally live my days in. This was a hard experiment for me considering I typically try to be “camera-ready”, but I think I am at a different stage in life where I realize there is no show here or in life, it is about living, being exactly who you are, flaws, daily outfits and all.

So when I garden, I anticipate getting dirty or rather embrace getting dirty. I don’t paint my nails and most of the time I am digging dirt out from under them. I thrive on getting dirty and being outside. It is where I am my best. I end my days and begin my days weeding, checking on plants, coaxing my sugar snaps up their trellis, and making sure Hayes doesn’t pull plants out of the ground. I many times am barefoot, but on cool nights I typically wear my sandals or Blundstones to the garden. I enjoy having shoes I can just pull on more than anything, especially now as a mom.

Most evenings I am wearing a loose fitting tee and some straight cut/boy jeans that if they get a stain on them or rip it simply will add to the character and patina of them rather than ruin them. You won’t see me wearing something in the garden that cannot be dirty or get gross. My favorite shirt right now is from Mollusk Surf Co. Some of Mike and I’s favorite clothes these days are from them. They cater to our relaxed life and style extremely well. This is the shirt I am wearing below that they sent me and I legitimately have been wearing it nonstop. I also love a good leather sandal for easy grab and go outside and these ones from L.L. Bean were ones I was glad to pull out from last year. They are now perfectly broken in and easily slip on and off. What I love about leather sandals is they get better with wear. I adventure in them, grocery shop in them, garden in them, anything is good to me, because if something spills or gets on them it just adds to their character and story.

With late evening light these days, we put Hayes to bed and I jump on shoots with Mike for the blog. It works well since the light is the best at this time of day and Mike is completely free as well. This usually means I am still in whatever I wore during the day while working and/or watching Hayes. Though I am not much of a dress person, I have some that I love and this one that FashionABLE just released in Pima Cotton from Peru is my new favorite. It is so simple and classic, fits great, and hangs longer so I can bend over and pick up Hayes and not worry about wind blowing it up. On chilly evenings I live in my relaxed Levi’s denim jacket. Though here I am barefoot, during the day when I was at the store that afternoon, I was wearing a pair of slip-on sneakers from Vince.

A warm day out on the peninsula called for some shorts and a favorite light weight sweatshirt. It took me a long time to find a pair of denim shorts that felt both comfy, not too tight, not too short, and like me. Finally about three years ago I caught these ones from Madewell on sale. They fit perfectly and I loved that they were paint splattered because that is my style; clothes that can have patina. I love having things that can get dirty especially when you have a 1 year-old and I don’t feel guilty about it and these do the trick. I also, don’t typically wear things that have patterns on them, but this tie-dye sweatshirt from Mollusk has stolen my heart and is on repeat. It is the perfect weight for cool summer mornings, plus it makes me feel a little like I am at summer camp, which is a wonderful feeling in the summer. Finally, my Soludos are an essential for me in the summer. I wear them so much these ones have worn out after almost four years of constant wear and I need to make a point to get a new pair this year. Hard to part with something so worn in, but they served their time.

Would love to hear the things you wear a lot throughout the week this time of year!

Also, Mike finally convinced me that the Negroni is good. Maybe it just needed to get warmer outside for me to finally like it. Who knows!?

  1. I love this post, Megan (I find myself saying that after all of your posts lately – love the new direction you are heading)! Super inspiring as I am to live a similar life mind-set wise and just love that you are putting this out here for all of us! Thank you!

  2. The best fashion post i have read in a very long time – how far away from candid and hOnest blogs have become! WeLl done for keepiNG it real. Being in australia, this time of year a big woollen jumper is my staple, longing for the warmth to return soon enough.

  3. “I sometimes rewear the same shirt from the day before or even the one I slept in the night before”

I’ve been wearing the same mint colored denim capris for the last 6 days…. they are now complete with the smell of woodsmoke from last night.

  4. AMEN SISTER!

Especially (but not exclusively) this: “To me life is best lived when we think less about what we have to put on and more about what we will do once we are ready for the day.” and this: “I am at a different stage in life where I realize there is no show here or in life, it is about living, being exactly who you are, flaws, daily outfits and all.” (I am so there. finally.)

I love that you narrow it down to fabrics. I do to, but currently am in full silk discovery mode (although I don’t wear it in a fancy way, at all). As I will move through Iran and INto India this autumn, I figure I am going to need some silky cool.

THANK YOU for this gem of a blogpost!

  5. I am glad I am not the only one who sometimes wears the shirt they slept in hahahaha. Also, I have those same Kork-Ease sandals in a beige color, and LOVE them! Omg they were such a fantastic purchase. I will wear them for years!

  6. Love this! I find myself living in loose solid color tees from H&M, high-waist denim jeans, and a pair of a shorts I made from old jeans. I’m also hooked to my boyfriend’s denim button ups and this white, light-weight cotton button up from Old Navy. I have a couple dresses I enjoy pairing with a denim shirt. I’ve been working to trim down my closet and only keep items I really love, wear often that mix and match well!

For shoes, I’m yearning for a pair of Birkenstock sandals but recently bought some Nike Roshe sneakers that are easily my favorites!

  7. Such a good post!
For me, it really depends on the day. At work, I have to be dressy-casual, so I tend to wear slacks and a button-down shirt, but sometimes I like to slip in a cotton shirt/sweater/scarf combo.
Now that it’s summer-like (in Chicago, so the wind tends drop the temperature a bit), I’m spending my off-hours in shorts, T-shirts, and dresses. As a plus-size woman, I tend to get a decent amount of flak for wearing those things, but I’ve recently come to terms with the fact that, in just a year and a half, I’ll be 30, and I really don’t have time to care what people think about how I dress. So I wear what’s comfortable and in my style range (retro-inspired, 50’s leaning outfits) and just carry on with my life.
I hope to soon make friends with someone who can do bonfires at night, since we’re not allowed to do those in our suburb. I miss the smell of smoke lingering on my clothes and in my hair and waking up to the scent smushed into the pillows as a nice reminder of the night before.
